If you’re a fan of the Fifty Shades series, you might have already heard of the infamous ben wa balls. And if you haven’t, you soon will.

In this post, we’re going to be telling you all you need to know about these marvelous little marbles and how you can use them to improve your sex life (in more ways than one). Hint: How does a tighter vagina and more powerful orgasms sound?

Interested? Good. Just keep reading, and we’ll give you the lowdown.

What Are Ben Wa Balls?

Ben wa balls go by many names: kegel balls, love eggs, geisha balls, orgasm balls, venus balls, rin-no-tama… I could go on, but I won’t.

Whatever you call them, they’re all pretty much the same thing: small weighted balls that function as vaginal exercise weights. You insert them into your vagina and leave them there to roll around, work your pelvic muscles, and make you feel oh-so-good. You can think of them as a kind of part-health-trainer, part-sex-toy.

Kegel balls come in many different shapes and sizes. Sometimes, it’s just a single ball, and other times, it’s multiple balls linked together. They might be solid or hollow, round, or with a flared base, metal or plastic—it all depends on the product.

If you’re wondering where they came from, the answer is that no one’s completely sure, but rumor has it that they have roots in Asia. The best guess we have is that ben wa balls originated in Japan as long ago as 500 A.D, making them one of the world’s oldest sex toys.

Naturally, it didn’t take long for them to make their way to the west, and now, women all across the globe enjoy them. Hoorah, for globalization!

The Many Uses of Love Eggs

Why would you want to put a bunch of marbles in your vagina, you ask? Well, you’d be surprised; there are actually many reasons you might want to use love eggs. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Work your pelvic muscles

The vagina has muscles just like every other part of your body. And, like any other part of your body, those muscles respond to resistance training. Kegel balls do the same job for your pelvic muscles as dumbbells do for your biceps. That is, they provide weighted resistance to help them to grow stronger.

When you insert them into your vagina, your pelvic muscles tighten around them to hold them in place. That workout increases the strength of your pelvic floor muscles in the same way that kegel exercises do.

Improve sexual performance

One of the upshots of strengthening your vagina is that it allows you to give your partner a tighter squeeze when you’re in bed (something I’m sure he’ll appreciate). It’s good for you too – the stronger your pelvic muscles are, the more pleasurable your orgasms will be. This is especially useful for women that have had children and are looser than they’d like to be.

Treat incontinence

Another upshot of strengthening your pelvic floor muscles is that it can actually increase bladder control. For that reason, many gynecologists actually recommend ben wa balls and similar equipment to treat incontinence and leaking urine.

Self-pleasure and sexploration

You can also use your ben balls as a personal sex toy. When you place them inside you, they roll around and provide a subtle but powerful stimulation to your anterior vaginal wall, which is full of thousands of very sensitive nerve endings.

Unlike traditional vibrators and dildos, the point of ben wa balls isn’t to provide immediate sexual satisfaction. They’re more about teasing you and exploring your sensual side. You can leave them in for hours to prolong the enjoyment.

If you’re especially kinky, you can leave them inside you while you’re out of the house for light stimulation all day. It makes mundane tasks like shopping and sitting in your office chair so much more interesting.

Better sex

Some people even leave love eggs in while they’re having sex with their partner. This can be a great way to spice up your sex life. The ben wa balls will roll around as your partner thrusts and provide more pressure and stimulation to your vaginal walls, making it more pleasurable for both you and him.

Different Types of Ben Wa Balls

There are lots of different types of ben wa balls on the market, and we can broadly sub-categorize them into a few different groups based on their design, purpose, and features. Here are the different main categories you should know about.

Duotone Balls

Duotone balls are a specific type of ben wa balls designed primarily to be used as a sex toy. They’re hollow, rather than solid, and typically consist of a plastic or silicone case with a small weighted metal ball inside.

As you move around, the weight rolls around inside the plastic coating and causes the duotone balls to move around inside you and creates vibrations that provide stimulation. These types of balls and sometimes called ‘free-rolling’ ben wa balls.

Kegel Balls

Unlike duotone balls, kegel balls are geared more towards kegel usage than self-pleasure. They’re designed to be used primarily for kegel exercises and thus are typically more rigid and bigger than duotone balls. They are also usually solid, as opposed to hollow.

They may come in bundles with balls of different, adjustable weights so that you can increase the weight over time as your muscles become stronger (this is known as ‘progressive overload’), and they’re often made of body-safe silicone.

Connected / Non-connected

Some love eggs are linked together with a chain, silicone sheath, string, or something similar. Others come individually (like Yoni Eggs) or in sets of non-connected balls.

Connected ben wa balls tend to be easier to use as you can leave the string/chain hanging outside of your vagina for easy extraction. Loose, unconnected balls can be more difficult to use.

Magnetic Balls

It’s possible to find magnetic non-connected love eggs too. The magnets help the balls to stick together for easier retrieval in the absence of a string. They also make the balls move more randomly and vibrate buzzily as they collide together for added stimulation.

Vibrating Balls

Some kegel balls even include built-in vibrators that can be controlled remotely. These types of ben wa balls obviously provide more powerful vibrations compared to traditional ben wa balls and are much less subtle in terms of stimulation.

Vibrating love eggs are much more of a sex toy than a kegel exerciser, so if that’s what you’re looking for, they’re worth considering.

Are They Safe?

Ben wa balls are usually fairly safe in most circumstances, as long as you use them correctly, but it’s always worth speaking to your doctor if you’re concerned. There are also some exceptions to this, and instances in which love eggs might not be suitable, which we’ll cover further below.

One of the biggest safety concerns women have regarding love eggs is that they might get ‘lost’ in their vagina. To put your mind at ease, this isn’t possible. Your cervix prevents anything (including kegel balls) from migrating beyond the vagina, so don’t worry – they won’t disappear into the abyss!

Anally, however, it’s a different story. Ben wa balls can easily get stuck or migrate too far into your colon if used anally. That’s why you must NEVER insert them into your anus. While it might be tempting to do so, you need to resist that temptation. Love eggs aren’t designed for anal use and can cause pain, discomfort, and other problems if you try.

Also note that, while kegel balls are generally safe, you should still listen to your body and discontinue use if you experience any pain, discomfort, or unusual discharge or odor.

Safety tips

Aside from the above, there are also a few risks that come with exercising your pelvic muscles, such as overexertion, pain, discomfort, and tearing. You can minimize these risks by using your kegel balls in moderation and following the safety tips below.

  • Make sure you use balls of the correct size and weight for your needs
  • Follow the correct technique and use your ben wa balls according to your manufacturer’s guidelines
  • When performing Kegel exercises, avoid squeezing for too long as this can lead to overexertion and strains. Aim to squeeze for around 5 seconds at a time and to rest for at least 5 seconds between reps.
  • Try them out for just 5 minutes or so the first time you use them and listen to your body to make sure they’re suitable for you before using them for longer periods of time.
  • Don’t leave your love eggs in place for longer than 6 hours at a time. Ideally, use them for no longer than 20-30 minutes per day.
  • Avoid using them every day. It’s important to ‘rest’ your pelvic muscles in the same way that it’s important to rest other muscles after resistance training. The rest period allows them to recover and grow stronger.
  • Clean your ben wall balls before and after each use to avoid bacterial infections.

When NOT to use love eggs

It might be riskier to use kegel balls in certain circumstances. Check with your doctor before using them if any of the below apply to you:

  • You suffer from pelvic pain or have a pelvic infection
  • You’re pregnant or have recently given birth
  • You have an IUD (intrauterine device)
  • You’re currently recovering from gynecological surgery
  • You use a menstrual cup

Kegel Balls Buying Guide

Here’s a quick buying guide to show you what to look out for and consider when you’re shopping for ben wa balls.

The first thing to think about is the type of love eggs you’re looking for. Think about whether you’d prefer kegel or duotone, connected or non-connected, vibrating or non-vibrating. That’ll help you to narrow down the pool of options so that it’s easier to find what you’re looking for.

If you’re a beginner, I’d recommend starting out with connected balls and steering clear of vibrating models at first. Once you’ve gotten used to them and feel you’re ready to explore new sensations, you can try out non-connected balls and vibrating models.

The material of your love eggs makes a huge difference to the experience. Kegel balls can be made from all sorts of materials, like glass, stainless steel, plastic, silicone, rubber, and more. If you’re rich enough, you can even get your hands on ben wa balls made from 20-karat gold.

I’d recommend starting out with a body-safe silicone set as they tend to be more lightweight. Avoid porous materials as these tend to harbor germs and can increase your risk of getting an infection.

Metal balls can be great too, but they tend to be heavier than silicone, which can make them difficult to use when you’re just starting out. If your pelvic muscles are already strong, or you’ve been using kegel balls for a while, they’re worth considering.

Weight and Size

Make sure you check the weight and size of any ben wa balls you’re interested in before you try them. Lighter kegel balls are better for beginners, but you should also increase the weight over time if you’re aiming to strengthen your pelvic floor.

The right size for your love eggs will depend on your personal preference. Some women like them larger; others prefer them smaller. For beginners, I’d recommend starting out with larger kegel balls as they’re easier to use and retrieve, but smaller balls tend to move around more and can feel more pleasurable.

Retrieval loops/string

For most women, I’d recommend making sure you buy ben wa balls that come with a retrieval loop for easy extraction.

Loops can be made from different materials. Try to avoid loops made of string if possible as string is porous and much more difficult to clean than materials like silicone. A metal chain or silicone sheath is a much better option.

Number of balls

Love eggs tend to come in sets of two, but they can also come individually or in sets of three or more. It’s a good idea to start out with two and only consider adding more once you feel comfortable with the sensation and know what you’re doing.

Shape and design

The shape and design of ben wa balls also affect the way they feel. They come in all kinds of shapes and might be cherry-shaped, tapered, completely round, or something else entirely. The only real way to figure out what shape is best for you is to try them out and see what you like best.

Extra features

If you’re shopping for vibrating love eggs, there are a few extra features worth considering too. One thing to look out for is the vibration intensity and adjustability. The more vibration modes you have to choose from, the more likely it is you’ll be able to find a pattern and intensity that knocks your socks off.

You’ll also want to think about things like the battery life, recharge speed, and whether or not it’s waterproof (in case you want to use it in the bath)

Doctor Recommendations

If you’re using ben wa balls to treat incontinence or strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, it might be a good idea to speak to your doctor or gynecologist first. There are other ways to strengthen the pelvic floor, and your doctor should be able to tell you if kegel balls are the best option for you. They might also be able to recommend specific products that best fit your needs.

Top 5 Best Ben Wa Balls

Here are my top 5 picks for the best love eggs on the market.

1. LELO LUNA Beads

The world-famous LUNA Beads by LELO are a global best-seller and claim to be the world’s most trusted ‘pleasure beads’ (AKA ben wa balls). There is a reason they’re so famous, and it isn’t just marketing.

They’re some of the best-made, body-safe kegel balls on the market. They’re a classic example of ben wa balls and feature two weight-adjustable, completely round beads joined by a silicone strap. They come in two sizes: Classic and Mini. The Classic version is slightly larger.

If you purchase them, you get a set with four interchangeable beads of different weights. You can change them around to experiment with different weights and increase the weight as you get stronger.

2. Coco de Mer Catherine Pleasure Balls set

Next up, we have this lovely trio of pleasure balls from Coco de Mer. While useful as a sex toy, I personally feel that these work better as kegel exercisers due to the shape, size, and weight. They come in a set of three different insertables of different weights: 50g, 77g, and 118g. You can start out at the lower weight and work your way up gradually as your muscles get stronger.

I also appreciate how different the shapes of these balls are. Each of the different insertables follows a very different design. One has two clearly-separated balls joined by a sheath, another has just one, and the third has a kind of hourglass shape.

They’re made from smooth silicone and come in their own discreet leather storage case.

3. Ben Wa Hematite Magnetic Love Balls

Unlike the last two products, these magnetic love balls are non-connected. Each of them can be inserted individually for when you’re looking for a new challenge.

What makes magnetized kegel balls so great is that they have an interesting effect on your body. Apparently, they attract and repel charged particles in your blood, which causes a boost in circulations to your vaginal muscles. That, in turn, leads to increased stimulation and better orgasms. Cool, right?

4. Desire Luxury Rechargeable Remote Control Kegel Balls

If you’re in the market for a vibrating pair of love eggs, look no further than these Desire luxury kegel balls. These balls come with eight pre-set vibration patterns and twelve levels of intensity, so you can tailor the vibrations to your exact requirements.

They’re tapered nicely at the end, which makes them really easy to insert, and they’re fully waterproof, so feel free to use them in the bath (just don’t take the remote in with you). You can recharge them via a USB or through their carry case.

5. Kegel Training Set Strawberry

Last but not least, we have a kegel training set from Cal Exotics. This is my number one recommendation for complete beginners as they’re super easy to use when you’re first starting out.

They come in a set of six, cute, strawberry-shaped kegel balls of different weights. You can start with the lightest weight and move onto heavier ones gradually. Each one of the items in the set is pretty small and attached to a retrieval loop. To make things even easier for newbies, they even come with recommended exercises for you to follow.

How to Insert Kegel Balls

Once you’ve got yourself a nice new pair of ben wa balls, you probably want to know how to use them. Let’s start at the beginning and look at how to insert them.

Step 1: Prepare the love eggs

The first step is to prepare your ben wa balls for use by making sure they’re clean. Grab some antibacterial soap and wash both your hands and your love eggs with soap and warm water, then use a towel to dry them.

After that, it’s a good idea to rub some water-based lube on them. This will help you to insert them easily.

Step 2: Lube up and lie down

Double up on the lube and apply some liberally to the opening of your vagina, then lie down on your back in a spread-eagle position.

Step 3: Insert the first ball

Now the fun starts. Grab the set of ben wa balls and slowly pop the first one inside your vaginal opening. Make sure you’re comfortable with the way it feels before you insert the rest of the balls. If it feels too heavy or causes any pain or discomfort at this point, you might want to stop and try again with a lighter or smaller set.

Step 4: Tuck the string in and insert the second ball

If you’re using a connected set, the first ball may be attached to the next one by a string or piece of material. Tuck that inside your vagina and then start inserting the second ball slowly, just like the first one. If you’re using a set of three or more, repeat this to insert any remaining balls.

Step 5: Push them as deep as your comfortable with

Finally, you can push the balls deeper into your vagina – as deep as your comfortable with. Just make sure to leave the removal loop hanging outside your vagina so that you can take them back out quickly and easily should the need arise.

If you’re using a set of individual (non-connected) ben wa balls, make sure you don’t push them further back than you can easily retrieve.

Once they’re fully in, stand up and see how they feel. They should feel pretty secure in there, not like they’re about to fall out. You might feel a subtle, tingly sensation, something more intense, or no sensation at all – the feeling is different for everyone.

How to Use Love Eggs

Ok, they’re in. Now what? Well, what you do next depends on what you’re using the love eggs for. We’ve explained how to use them for kegel exercise, sexual pleasure, and partner play separately below.

To Tighten Your Vagina

You can incorporate love eggs into your usual Kegel exercise routine. This will enhance your workout and strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, which will help to tighten your vagina.

Here’s how to use ben wa balls in your kegel exercise routine:

  • Insert the kegel balls
  • Contract your pelvic floor muscles for 5 seconds to squeeze and lift the balls up
  • Relax your pelvic floor muscles for 5 seconds
  • Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the duration of your workout

Each contraction and relaxation cycle constitutes one ‘rep’ (repetition). It’s usually a good idea to perform around 15-20 reps and then take a break. A full lot of completed reps is called a ‘set.’ I’d recommend performing 2-3 sets of 15-20 reps per day.

For Sexual Pleasure

Kegel balls feel best when you’re moving. As you move your body, the balls jiggle around or vibrate, which provides the stimulation. It doesn’t really matter what you’re doing, as long as you’re moving.

As such, an easy way to use your ben wa balls for sexual pleasure is to just pop them in and get on with your errands. The more active you are, the more benefit you’ll get out of them.

Here are some ideas to get you moving that you might want to try while wearing your love eggs:

With Your Partner

Using your ben wa balls with your partner is one of the best ways to get the most out of them. Here are some ideas you can try:

  • Insert vibrating love eggs and hand your partner the remote. Letting them control the vibrations while you’re out and about is a naughty, kinky, and super hot.
  • Pop them in during a round of foreplay. They’re a great way to get aroused and work yourself up for the main event.
  • Leave them in for vaginal penetration (not recommended for beginners). As your partner penetrates you, it’ll move the balls around and provide extra pressure on your sensitive spots for intense pleasure. Just take it easy to prevent discomfort and make sure that your partner thrusts slowly and steadily.
  • Wear them (vaginally) during anal sex. The anal penetration will help to move the balls around and push them against your G-spot for double the pleasure.

How to Remove Love Eggs

Once the fun’s over, removal should be pretty easy. If you’re using connected balls that come with a removal loop, all you have to do is lie down, add some lube to the opening of your vagina, and slowly pull on the loop until they pop out.

If the loop has disappeared up in there, or you’re using non-connected balls, stand up instead with your feet wide apart and bend your knees, then squeeze your vaginal muscles. The pressure should push them out.

If not, stomp your feet a little or jump up and down to shake them out. Don’t panic if they don’t come out right away, they’ll probably just need a little coaxing and should drop out eventually.

Note: You shouldn’t leave your kegel balls inside you overnight or for longer than six hours per day. In some cases, you should remove them a lot sooner than that. Speak to your doctor for more specific advice for your body.

Care & Maintenance

It’s important to clean your ben wa balls regularly and store them properly for hygiene purposes. To clean them, run them under warm water and scrub with antibacterial hand soap, then wash off the soap with more water and pat them dry.

Always make sure they’re completely dry before you store them, and keep them separate from your other sex toys. This is especially important if you’re using love eggs made from silicone, as silicone sex toys react with each other, which can cause damage and abrasions.

Final Thoughts

Ben wa balls aren’t for everyone, but they can be a great way to strengthen your pleasure and your pelvic floor muscles if you’re willing to give them a shot.

If they’re not for you, there are plenty of other sex toys that might be more up your street. We’ve written guides to a bunch of them right here on Love Nest, so make sure you check them out on our blog.

What do you think of kegel balls? Have you tried them? Did they help to tighten your vagina? And how did they feel? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
